Thirty by Thirty Project – Conserving 30% of Chelsea by 2030
In accordance with the Global Biodiversity Framework's “30x30" target, Canada set the goal of conserving 30 percent of Canada’s land and water by 2030. As per Resolution 218-22 of the Municipality of Chelsea (ordinary session - July 5th, 2022), Chelsea undertakes to dedicate at least 30% of its territory, excluding Gatineau Park, to conservation and the protection of natural environments in perpetuity and the promotion of the protection of biodiversity by 2030 through the development and adoption of a natural environment conservation plan in 2023.
Stephan Moresoli, ACRE Director and geomatics specialist, is working closely with the Municipality of Chelsea to help it achieve its goal of protecting 30% of its territory outside Gatineau Park. His report provides an overview of lands already protected to varying degrees, including existing and future protected areas, conservation easements, watercourses, wetlands, habitats of threatened or endangered species, and NCC lands located outside the Park. It also identifies lands that could be protected in the future and outlines recommended next steps.
