Thirty by Thirty Project – Conserving 30% of Chelsea by 2030

In accordance with the Global Biodiversity Framework's “30x30" target, Canada set the goal of conserving 30 percent of Canada’s land and water by 2030. As per Resolution 218-22 of the Municipality of Chelsea (ordinary session - July 5th, 2022), Chelsea undertakes to dedicate at least 30% of its territory, excluding Gatineau Park, to conservation and the protection of natural environments in perpetuity and the promotion of the protection of biodiversity by 2030 through the development and adoption of a natural environment conservation plan in 2023.

ACRE’s Director Stephan Moresoli has been working closely with the Municipality of Chelsea and has developed a report describing the areas in Chelsea that need to be conserved and protected. The report focuses on and calculates the area of the following categories of land: ACRE properties, conservation parks, water courses, wetlands, endangered and threatened species' habitats, and NCC's lands outside of the Gatineau Park. Specific treatments (e.g., buffer zones) and geospatial databases are suggested for different categories. Also, the report includes treatment and process diagrams.

Becoming carbon neutral Chelsea by 2035

For several years, ACRE has been part of the Climate Transitions Cohort. We have been participating in monthly calls and learning about net zero and other climate initiatives in different Canadian communities. As part of the membership, ACRE has had access to the coaching sessions with Tamarack's consulting directors, innovation fund, community contributions fund that offered workshops and stipends for engaging local residents with lived experience, and free seats at national events.
